Milescraft 1212 Sign Pro Router Signmaking Jig Reviews

After being very disappointed with a previous sign jig I was nervious about trying another. This jig is easy to use, clamps well to the product and comes complete with all the necessary accessories to set it up and begin work.

I purchased the Sign Pro to help my son make a trail sign for his Eagle Scout project. It took a little practice to get the letters cut right.
I broke one letter on my second try. This is because I did not have the chase tight enough and a letter came loose. They will pop out if you are not careful.
(The chase is the frame that holds the letters.)
If you want to do a lot of signs, I recommend that you order an extra letter kit. They supply two letters each with the original kit.
You are also limited to letter size. You can only do 2 1/2" and 1 1/2" letters.
You can do bigger letters with the Panagraph MilesCraft sells. You can also do graphics with it also.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also recommend that you make short chases of letters instead of making a long chase of letters. It's easier to handle and you are less likly to make an mistake.
Be sure to use other letters as spacers between your words. Turn them around backwards so you won't cut them by mistake and mess up your sign.
Over all, I recommend the Sign Pro. It did a good job on our sign.

Color as a semiotic resource in early sign-making.(Report): An article from: Early Childhood Research & Practice
This digital document is an article from Early Childhood Research & Practice, published by Clearinghouse on Early Education & Parenting on September 22, 2009. The length of the article is 9039 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
From the author: This parent-research article juxtaposes two theoretical frameworks in support of an analysis of a young child's uses of color in her sign-making; that is, in her efforts at writing and drawing. Perspectives from both social semiotics and the idea of literacy learning as social practice frame the examination and interpretation of the early sign-making of the child, who speaks both English and Japanese. The data sources include observations, reflective notes, transcribed audio recordings, and writing and drawing artifacts collected in the home when the child was between the ages of 3 and 7 years. This article reports how color served the child as an immediate resource for classifying, discriminating, and associating between the attributes of different objects and concepts in her written and pictorial representations. Color enabled her to identify and disambiguate objects and ideas within the signs that she produced. These findings call attention to the complexities of how children become literate, particularly the ways in which they may take active roles in that process, making decisions about the modes and tools they will use to represent ideas and concepts in their sign-making. The article concludes with a discussion of implications regarding approaches to children's writing and drawing in contemporary early childhood classrooms.

Milescraft 1206 SignCrafter Signmaking template kit with TurnLock Reviews

I have been able to quickly and easily create several signs in the last few days since purchasing this. It does work quite well, but you've got to use a lot of extra clamps to keep the templates from moving. The little thumbscrews that are used to "clamp" the sign in place are really only good for setting the alignment of the template. They are way too loose and weak to keep the thing in place when a router is moving over it - not even close to holding it down. Plus, if you're using the full-length extension on it for wide signs, the center tends to flex back and forth due to another weak set of thumbscrews that barely hold the thing together.
So, what I do, is use a set of about 4 good clamps at various places along the template to keep the entire thing completely rigid and solid. As I move the router along I have to move clamps to keep them out of the way, but it's no big deal. That being said, there is another version of the SignCrafter template that I've seen sold online which has different end-brackets. It comes with brackets that are designed for clamps, and the kit even comes with low-profile clamps.
For the price, the SignCrafter is a great deal! The letter set is missing some things that I think should be included, but as best I can tell are not even available anywhere. Such things as punctuation (question marks, exclamation marks, etc., and other things that a signmaking kit should have like templates for arrows and other markers. I think I'll try fabricating my own templates to fit the kit by using a scrollsaw and some 1/8" plexiglass.
Oh, and you'll definitely want to use a 1/2" box core bit for the 2.5" letters. Anything smaller and the letters come out a bit thin looking. The kit comes with a smaller bit - I don't use it. Similarly, you'll want a 1/4" bit for the small letters.

Well, I've been working on a chest of drawers for my son for longer than I'd like to admit! Anyway, as part of the design, I thought carving a name plate as a "faux" drawer front would make a nice addition. Well, I decided wooden letters would make a cheap and easy template. Unfortunately, none were of size that I needed.
I came across this kit in one of the Big box stores after resigning to the notion of not being able to do the nameplate. Now, I was already familiar with the product and had considered buying it, but the cost wasn't justifiable taking into account that I really only needed it for this project (and already overbudget!). Long story short, today I found this in the "Blue" box store for on clearance! I'm not joking...
With that said, I was really impressed with my find and eager to give it a go. I got home and started assembly. I really only used the directions to check orientation of the rails and a few other tasks... It was a fairly straightforward process.
I will say I was impressed with the number of parts and extras that were included (router bit, extra letters, etc). The Turnlock system is pretty neat, but I don't like the idea of plastic bushings (my router came with brass ones). Anyway, the system does work well though.
In action the rail setup is flimsy and needs additional clamping for certain. Once everything is secured, it works. I must admit that after two practice runs I have not completed a sign that is without flaws. It takes some practice for sure.
The lettering font is obviously very basic and not as nice as the wooden letters I'd found for templates. So a drawback is definitely the limitation of fonts with this system. Again, for basic signs it gets it done.
I would prefer a better system if woodworking/signmaking were my bread and butter; but for the occassional forray into signmaking and for the price I paid for this kit (), it was well worth it. Wooden letters to spell out my son's name cost nearly as much from the box Hobby store...If I'd spent the full price for this set, I'd be dissappointed. However, truth be told, it gets the job done with modest modification and a bit of practice.
